.
Generation No. 1

1.  MOSHE (MOSES) HENRIQUES1 VALENTINE was born Abt. 1670.  He married ? Abt. 1692.

Notes for MOSHE (MOSES) HENRIQUES VALENTINE:
One of the earliest members of the Portuguese synagogue in London was Imanuel Valencim. In 1445 Jacob Valencim, surgeon and opthamologist lived in Lamego. In 1455 and 1476 Judas Valencim, merchant, Salomão Valecim, merchant and a Master Jacob, surgeon of Prince D. Henrique. No ano de 1480 conhecemos Juda Valencim servidor do rei.
1484: Mestre Suas Valencim físico, cirurgião e rabi.
1488 (and 1490?): David Valencim
1491 encontramos Mestre Suas Velencim físico, cirurgião e escrivão.

In the city of Lamego we also find a long list of names. the largest numbers in this list correspond to the names of Abraão with 21 appearances and Isaac with 20. With a lower incidence are found the names; Aaram, Abas, Abenazerim, Baruc, Benziza, Daniel, Eichel, Eliezer, Estrela, Franco, Jaque, Juçoel, Lambroso, Luas,  Lumbroso, Meir, Menaém, Rina, Set, Valencim, Vida, with only a mention.

TRANSLATION: The family Valencim lies exclusively in Lamego since the year 1445 to 1491, where we met once in 1445, a surgeon and ophthalmologist, ten years later observed the presence of two merchants, and a gibiteiro in 1484 we have the mention of even a physicist who was a surgeon and rabbi, in 1486 we again meet a merchant and in 1491 it is mentioned a resident who is a physicist, surgeon and registrar.

In 1616, a Portugiesen Jew Gabriel de VALENTZA arrived in Amsterdam.
In 1654 Manuel Valensin was in Venice, and soon thereafter Emanuel VALENSIN was in Roth, Germany, possibily the same person.
Several years ago a Beth Hatefutsoth Museum researcher wrote to J.C. Lieberman Boulder, Colorado about records showing Valentine had sometimes been substituted for the Biblical name Pelet (one who escapes). Also found were records for a family named JOBBIN whose surname changed to VALENTIN.

ROUEN, FRANCE:  Étienne, alias David de Ajes, Coimbra, who, some time previously, had formally converted to Judaism at Amsterdam and thus could not plead [the] innocence like the others, [and] reconciled himself with the Holy Church and was absolved of all penalty that it would accrue for his apostasy. His wife, a Jew by birth, as well as his servant, Emanuel Valensin, asked to be instructed in the dogmas of Christianity; while his son Isaac was baptized and committed as a Christian to be raised in an orthodox manner 3. Similarly, Juan de Acosta was baptized in the Cathedral – surely in great pomp – on the 28 August 1633. Some of those that had left the city preferred not to return there at all. Antonio Fernandes Carvajal appeared to be living in London, where he was rejoined by his brother-in-law Manuel Nunes Rodrigues, who at a later date was associated with him in the foundation of the community of this city. Thus events of Rouen in 1632-3 can be considered as the opportunity that assisted the birth of the modern Jewish community in England.

Many were originally from Ciudad Rodrigo, Spain:  1623-33  Indice de las [160] personas testificadas por Manuel Rodriguez,  portugues, natural de Biarres, en Francia desde once de nov. 4 de 1632 hasta fin del afio de 1633.  Inquisition testimony had many people testified including: Manuel Enrriquez Valentin, of Viarres, neighbour from Viarres, and his wife, mother (in-law?), and two maids and a daughter. also: Manuel Enrriquez Valentin, and his wife, mother (in-law) and two sisters (called cuñadas), neighbors from Biarres

A Manuel Valencim (Valentim?) was a diamond trader of Venice (1600s?).

Looking to find info about the unusual first name of Vallendin(e), Vallentine, Vallendien.  The intechangability of D and T suggests the Palatinate you're speaking of is the Bavarian one, where these letters were more or less interchangeable. It’s obviously from the Latin name Valentine (meaning "strong" or "heroic" cf valiant). It could be derived from Falk - Faelklein (Falk is the kinnuy for Yehoshua/Joshua.) unknown if these are relatives

One of the earliest members of the Portuguese synagogue in London was Issac Semah de Valencia.

Georgia, 1760: David Vallaton was later one of the patriot soldiers in the Amer. Revolution, and is mentioned in the Journal of Mordecai Sheftall.  His name appears in various forms as David Yalentonge, David Moses Valentonge, David Moses Vouaton and David Moses Valentin.  It is likely, perhaps, that he was the ancestor of the Valentine family of the south US.

Notes for SOLOMON DA SILVA SOLIS:
Spanish and Portuguese family of crypto-Jews, some of whom were inquisitors, while others were victims of the Inquisition. Those who made good their escape to the Netherlands,  France, and England openly professed Judaism. In the eighteenth and early part of the nineteenth century some went to America, settling in various parts of the West Indies and  the United States. The American branch of the family traces its descent back to Solomon da Silva Solis, who married Isabel da Fonseca and who emigrated from Spain to Amsterdam in the seventeenth century.

Notes for DAVID HENRIQUES VALENTINE:
David Henriques Valentine was born in London 1758, his marriage record is in Bevis marks records, and there are not many Jewel's (her last name), in fact she may be the only Jewel (Juhul) in the Bevis Marks records, his birth date matches his death date etc, most of his kids were born in London.

It is thought he left London after going bankrupt, he also went bankrupt twice in New York, it was not uncommon, especially for the Jewish merchants to do so, people bought goods on credit a lot, and if they didn't pay, you suffered, but there may have been some shadiness and advantage taken by these guys who went bankrupt so that they'd figured out how to use the system but get some of the $$ back, by using a friend as the bankruptcy accountant/executor. He was very religious.

David Henriques Valentine

In 1927 Capt. N. Taylor Phillips, a descendant of a colonial family, spoke before Congregation Shearith Israel of New York in an informal fashion. The captain is the depository of a host of traditions of this the mother-synagogue of American Jewry. His anecdotes give us many insights into the socio-cultural and religious life of the first Jewish institution on the North American mainland. It is appropriate that Capt. Phillips' address should be published in this tercentennial year .

Among the picturesque characters of the congregation was a shamus named David Henriques Valentine. He was a full-blooded Portuguese. He came direct from Lisbon in Portugal, and had been a Marrano  up about 1800. And that was going some, because his family lasted in Portugal as Marranos from 1492 to 1800. It was not such a bad proposition; but, however, they say that he had actual marks on his wrists. He had been seized by the Inquisition, and the marks were on his wrists where he had been confined in dungeons. He escaped and came direct to New York from Lisbon. He was the real goods-a genuine, full-blooded Portuguese Marrano. His daughter Rebecca married Jacob Berlin, and their daughter was Mrs. Hannah Krauth. She was a very old woman when I was a child. I think that with her the family died out. Valentine was quite a "card" in his way. I don't know whether it was the spirit of the shamas in him, but he was a very fine fellow, and he was ready to meet all comers at all times. The trustees very much resented it on one occasion in the Mill Street Synagogue, the first synagogue-I don't know whether any of you have ever seen the synagogue in Newport, but it was built in that way.

The gallery was approached by a sort of separate building-an entrance on the side of the synagogue-and the women went in that and then up into the ladies' gallery so that they did not come in the same door with the men, as we do here. The men went in one side of the building, and the women went in the other side of the building and went upstairs into the gallery. That was the arrangement here for many years until after the Revolution. It was a little inaccessible to the shamas to go outside into the schul ["synagogue"] yard and into the separate entrance for the women and then up into the gallery, so they put a flight of steps at one end of the interior of the synagogue that went from the auditorium up to the gallery.

On one occasion, on the Day of Atonement, a dog got up some way or other through the other entrance into the ladies' gallery, and Mr. Valentine went up. Of course, the ladies were very frightened, and Mr. Valentine went up to take the dog out, but instead of picking up the dog in his arms and walking out with it, he picked it up by the ear and held it out at arm's length. As a result the dog was screaming and yelping, and in that way he carried it down the steps and through the schul out into the yard. The parnas did not like that performance, and thought it a little indecorous, and it upset the whole service. The whole place was in convulsions, and the parnas thought it would not be proper to wait until after the service to take action, so he called Valentine up to his seat and "bawled him out," as we say now, for his unseemly conduct. But, much to his amazement, Mr. Valentine turned around and "sassed him back," and gave him quite an argument, until someone stopped the debate and took Mr. Valentine out and ended the performance. But he was a fine, clever fellow and could read the service and do lots of other things, and was a very handy man to have around the place.

Moving East down Mile End Road along the front of Queen Mary's college for a quarter of a mile or so brings you to a small length of old brick wall. This is a remnant of the boundary wall of the Sephardi Novo Beth Chaim cemetery that replaced the Old Velho Cemetery. This cemetery would be located at 320 Mile End Road were it still to have a main road frontage. However much of the cemetery was removed in the 1970's, and only some 2000 graves now remain from the original 9500. The remnant lies hidden in the grounds of Queen Mary's College. To gain access, turn left (North) off Mile End Road into Westfield Way. Turn left again into the staff car park behind Queen Mary's Faculty of Arts building and you will come to an old brick wall. Look over the wall and there is the cemetery. It is called Novo Beth Chaim. It was opened in 1725 and closed in the 1920s. Much of the original cemetery was excavated and removed to provide building land for Queen Mary's college. Note the laid flat tombstones (Sephardi style) in the photos included.
The Novo cemetery was partly cleared in the 1970s in accordance with Rabbinic requirements in face of a compulsory purchase order. Re-interments were carried out at Brentwood, Essex where all the names are recorded on plaques.
