9.  JOZEF LEVI5 HANDRICKS (LEVIE JOSEPH JOZALE4 HANGJAS, JOSEPH JOZALE ABRAHAM HANGJAS3 TURFKRUIJER, LEVY JOEL HANGJAS2, JOEL JOSEPH HANGJAS1) was born 30 Dec 1829 in Haarlem, Holland, and died 06 Feb 1893 in His residence, Sackville St, Port Fairy, Vic, Aust.  He married SARAH ELIZABETH MCKENNA 07 Jun 1862 in House of Mr Frederick Scott (Sarah's guardian), Ararat, Victoria, daughter of JAMES MCKENNA and ELIZABETH COPE.  She was born 1843 in Armagh, Ireland, and died 05 Mar 1929 in At the residence of Mrs A M Buxton, 118 Charles Street,West Perth.

Notes for JOZEF LEVI HANDRICKS:
The naturalization certificate (on microfilm) for Joseph Handricks can be found at the Geelong Historical Records Centre. It was dated 17th Oct. 1863 and he spelt his first name with an "f" (Josef) and his surname without the "c" (Handriks).  He was described on the certificate as "storekeeper of Ararat, county of Ripton".

The Ararat Advertiser of 10th June, 1862 lists the marriage of Joseph and Sarah. It states that Joseph was a fruiterer and formerly of Haerlem, Holland and that Sarah McKenna was from Armagh, Ireland. The marriage took place on 7th June.

The Port Fairy Gazette of 1893 announces the death of Joseph. The Death Notice said that he died on 6th February at his residence, Sackville Street, Port Fairy, aged 55 years. On 7th February there was a lengthy paragraph about his death entitled "A SUDDEN SEIZURE" and on 10th February another lengthy paragraph about him which mentioned that his remains were taken to "the metropolis for interment in the cemetery of the Jews, of which people, Mr Handricks was a member".

In the same paper appears a big advertisement for his business (CASH BUYER of wool, sheepskins, hides etc) as well as an advertisement for the business of Arthur Handricks (Saddler and Harness Maker).

Joseph Levie,  son of Levie Josepf Hangjas 45 years, merchant and Hendreintje Joseph Welkons (alsoo written as Welkonst in 1825) Wittn. Mozes Schoolmeester 36 years, merchant and Bernardus Serne, butcher

In the birth registration there were 2 other Jozef Levis Hangjas, born 19 sept 1823 and 2 Nov 1826. Perhaps these childeren died young and the last one stayed alive.
After the above mentioned census in 1829 there were born another six childeren.

Notes for SARAH ELIZABETH MCKENNA:
At the time of her marriage, Sarah's parents were dead however, she had the permission of her guardian for the marriage. Joseph's wife Sarah died in Perth. There were 2 death notices in the paper. The first said:  On March 5th, 1929, at the residence of Mrs Buxton, 118 Charles Street, West Perth, Sarah, late of Port Fairy, Victoria, dearly beloved mother of Arthur William Handricks of 54 Chelmsford Road, Mount Lawly; grandma of Sylvia and Clarence, aged 87 years.

The second notice said: On March 5th at 118 Charles Street, West Perth, Sarah, dearly beloved mother of Millie (Mrs W. P. Tompson), Arthur of Perth, Isabelle, Henry and Norman of New Zealand; grandmother of Iris Minchin, Maddie Crome, Clarence, Sylvia, Cedric, Gwenda, Norman, Douglas, Edwin and Bobby; great grandmother of Ronald, Brian and Willie, aged 87 years.

According to Brian Minchin (Sarah's great grandson) who as a 6 year old can just remeber her, Sarah always spoke quietly, was very small in stature and always wore a bonnet.

This vessel arrived in very excellent order in all respects; the people were clean, tidy, and well-behaved, and the greatest harmony prevailed on board. Sarah was shown on passenger list as a servant from Ireland

Rev James Magaw was the officiating minister. The marriage took place at the house of Mr Perth, Ararat, Sarah's residence. The bride's age is given as 18

The permission statement on the marriage certificate states " I, James Megaw do hereby certify that prior to the celebration of this marriage I had the written consent of Mr Frederick Perth, the bride's guardian, both her parents being dead."

Notes for HENRY (HARRY) HANDRICKS:
Harry was an entertainer with the Payne Family Bellringers and the Belle-Crome Bellringers with his sister, Isabella. His brother Norrie was thier manager. Harry was also a female impersonator under the stage name Harry Fane. He retired to an Oddfellow's retirement village (Garden Home) in Rotorua, NZ where he entertained patients and others with his musical abilities. He was a good mandolinist and pianist.

His published obituary read as follows:

Yet another link with the halcyon days of flesh and blood shows in the theatrical stages of New Zealand and Australia has gone with the death in the Rotorua Hospital last night of Mr Harry Handricks, whose stage name was Harry Fane. Mr Handricks, who was 82, had been in ill health for a number of years, but was always regarded as the entertainment light of Gardenhome, at Rotorua. a refuge for old men. Mr Handricks was born in Victoria, and an early interest in the stage lead to his joining a travelling dramatic and musical troupe. He visited South Africa during the Boer War, when a confusion of nationalities lead to the group playing before both sides of the conflict. It was as a member of the famous Belle Crome Bell Ringers that Mr Handricks was better known. He travelled extensively with this versatile group, playing a variety of parts and impressing with his virtuosity. Mr Handricks’ stage career ended about 25 years ago. Prior to coming to Rotorua nine years ago, he resided at Cambridge for 12 years. Mr Handricks is survived by a niece, Miss M. Crome, of Rotorua, and several cousins in Australia.

20.  RACHEL5 DUVEEN (ENOCH ELKAN JOSEPH4, JOSEPH MOSES HANGJAS3, MOSES JOEL HANGJAS2 TURFKRUIJER, JOEL JOSEPH HANGJAS1) was born 18 Jul 1822 in Meppel, Drenthe, Netherlands, and died 09 Feb 1866 in Zwolle.  She married JOSEPH JOEL KOOPMAN.  He was born 13 Apr 1814.

21.  SARA5 DUVEEN (ENOCH ELKAN JOSEPH4, JOSEPH MOSES HANGJAS3, MOSES JOEL HANGJAS2 TURFKRUIJER, JOEL JOSEPH HANGJAS1) was born 14 Dec 1826 in Meppel, Drenthe, Netherlands, and died 07 Jan 1899 in Assen.  She married MICHAEL NATHANS 1849. 

Children of SARA DUVEEN and MICHAEL NATHANS are:
    i.    NATHANS6 NATHANS, b. 1850.
    ii.    BETJE NATHANS, b. 1857, Assen.
